Youngsters of India:
The epidemic of suicide By Mithun Dey In India, the young generations make such things as an attempt to do something enthralling because of wrong peer anxiety, academic or other strains from society otherwise parents. In various cases, parents fail to deem the psyche of their children and thus they become an introvert and are unable to express them generously. The Children do not make out the truth and the falsehood. However, tension is the root cause of the evil. Youngsters are combating a lot of tension mainly because of the education system. This system believes more in rote learning and not lenient. The one who crams the book to the fullest bags the highest percentage and the one who tries to understand the meaning of the things has a fairly low chance of even passing the exam. Education turns into stimulating only when there’s something new to be taught and when one understands the meaning of what he studies. Learning and next repeating like a parrot will succor a student to achieve the highest marks but he will not have the essential components of life. In our country, many young people even commit suicide because of being frustrated with their academic marks or not get to success in their exam. Is securing 100% marks the only thing in life? Does getting less than that mean a person is ignorant? Or does it mean the end of life? There are so many cases in our country wherein innocent students of grade 8, 9 etc commit suicides and several times, the ill behaviour of the authorities also play a role. When a child becomes unruly, does it mean that he has to be rusticated? Recently an 8th grader in Mumbai committed suicide only because the principal was ready to expel him from the school and wanted to contact his parents immediately. Such things are very daunting. And in Uttar Pradesh, there were more than 16 students who committed suicide on score of being awarded unexpectedly low marks in their matriculation exam last year while they all had secured more than 50%. The education system of our country, by focusing too much on the exams, is generating those elemental ramparts which are supposed to make our kids more competitive and smarter. But some of those ramparts are political, social and economic and some of the kids are unable to comprehend the complexities and injustice of a system and nothing to do with education or opportunities. Moreover, In Jammu a multitude of factors ranging from mental disorder, illicit relations, failed love affairs, domestic violence and failure in studies continue to take a heavy toll on the Jammu residents, as on average 30 persons commit suicide and more than 150 try to end their lives in a month here. The figures of suicides reported in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) revealed that most of the victims were youngsters, followed by migrant labourers and housewives. Though without having any indisputable statistics on the exact number of suicides in Jammu, but the police sustained that the city has witnessed over 350 incidents of suicide and over 1,500 failed bids last year. It does mean one suicide and four unsuccessful attempts continue to take place everyday across the Jammu region. As per a survey report, in 1999 there were 800 minors who committed suicide in India, but the figures significantly rose to about 6840 in 2009. As per the report recent, 19 minors commit suicide in India every day on an average. It has been found that most of the suicide victims were from the age group of 14 to 30, indicating that the young generation is more prone to suicidal tendencies. I do think that this is modern era and people do not have much time for their families, thus the children in particular feel lonely and go astray. It is already saddled with their studies and pressure to perform well in their academics increases stress among them. Due to the pressure of studies, children remain tense and try to find an escape route through activities-sometimes not right and they fail to understand the implications of their behaviour. Sometimes children get into bad company and charter through the forbidden path; they fall into bad company and start getting into bad habits like drugs and other abusive lifestyle, which then goes out of their control. Any attempt to stop these tendencies results in serious consequences-from suicides to depression. Programmes like Reality Shows and other competitions distract the young ones from real situations where they are supposedly kept grounded. Aspirations sometimes go too far resulting loss of precious lives. Suicidal people of our young generation feel that they can no longer cope with their problems and that suicide may be the only way out. Many of them think about suicide at some point in their life. Today getting into higher education as IIM or IIT, rake up a loan to pay for the education, right away trying to get into a government medical college or any reputed institute causes immense stress, even if one succeeds in the end. While many aim to get that high paying job in a multi-national, or perhaps go abroad, some start their own business, staking everything they have and if that fails the disaster can drive people to suicide. It is usually considered that those who challenge to take their own life cannot have arrived at that result logically. They must be psychologically depressed and as a result, in need of taking an imperative care. No one in their right mind would want to encourage their own death and they must also bear the stigma of their failed attempt with them back into society. The connotations for such an individual are all heavily negative. Are we caring enough for our children, the millions who are the citizens of tomorrow? The answer is a big ‘NO’. They need our shelter, our kindness, our consideration most of all our love. Let’s not dump our insecurities on them and create an education system no different from the factory where sugarcane is crushed into smart, white, equal-sized sugar cubes. |
